The first rule is: we handle things our own way here. And the second one isn’t…

Police officer Robert has requested a transfer from Copenhagen to a small town. After his divorce, he needs to pull himself together, get at least some distance from his hot-tempered mother, and above all make sure order is kept and the law is obeyed. That is his mission and his goal. Fortunately, the local countryside is quiet. Some might even call it boring. Hardly any reported cases. Now and then maybe a cow gets stuck in the waterlogged ground, or a quarrel breaks out between the seductive Ingerlise and her jealous husband Jørgen. Though it’s true the bartender has a few odd remarks…

Soon, however, it becomes clear that the locals are quite eccentric—including the doctor and the owner of the village shop. On his very first case, Robert finds out what it really means that people here are used to “handling things their own way,” and that completely different laws apply in this place. Still, he has no intention of giving up his ideals, even if it seems he has no idea yet how deep the local swamp really is.

A dark Nordic comedy with elements of a western and horror brings a series of highly original situations. It shows how fragile the balance is—not only within an individual, but also within human society. And what price may be demanded for coming to terms with the past and achieving peace and happiness.

The stage adaptation is based on the novel of the same name (Frygtelig lykkelig) by Danish author Erling Jepsen.
