It is pointless to speak to fools—they have gone deaf. And why wouldn’t they, when you, wise men, are blind.

Sun-scorched Verona—and with it burns the age-old hatred of two families. The heat, emotions, and tension all rise. Clashes in the streets are an everyday occurrence. Anything can serve as a weapon, even words. And just as ostentatious as the threats are the declarations of love—and the notions of what love truly is. Passionate words turn into the whisper of death. And time passes, somewhat wearily… until another clash erupts and the Duke’s patience runs out; under threat of severe punishment, he forbids any further unrest. And then it happens: two young people, almost still children, from hostile families, fall fatefully in love. Suddenly it no longer matters who “the other” is—because the other suddenly becomes everything. The world as it was ceases to exist. Time and certainties vanish, and everything around them changes. Events rush forward at an unbelievable speed, almost frenzied. It nearly feels like a comedy, were it not for a few fateful mistakes and misunderstandings, and everything beginning to move inexorably toward tragedy. And words once spoken so lightly suddenly grow heavy when they must be turned into deeds.

One of the most famous love stories of all time. Two lovers whose love finds itself caught in the midst of a rivalry between two families. And also a clash of generations. Adults, entrenched in their world of rules, traditions, and futile desires for control, believe they know life and understand what is “reasonable” and safe. Yet it is precisely their grievances, old disputes, and inflexibility that often wound the young and keep alive an enchanted circle of passionate hatred. Romeo and Juliet, too, act with astonishing impetuosity and passion—but this springs from their intense feelings and their longing for freedom; and it proves fatal. Every decision they make has immediate and irreversible consequences. Despite the force of their impulsive actions, they remain fragile and sensitive, full of uncertainty and vulnerability, which make their love authentic. So who, then, builds the greater wall around themselves? And who prefers to strike first, in self-defense?
